The Anti-Counterfeit Agency (ACA) officers on Tuesday seized counterfeit SKF branded bearings worth Sh200, 000 in Eldoret town.
ACA inspectors who were accompanied by plain clothes police officers raided Allied and Industrial Solutions shop and arrested two suspects in a major crackdown of the SKF counterfeits that have flooded the Kenya’s automobile market.
The shop had both genuine and counterfeit SKF bearings. According to Director SKF Group Brand Protection Tina Astrom, some unscrupulous business people have infringed the SKF trade mark making the product to lose its market value for genuine products.
“We received complaints from customers who have been buying from this shop that the owners are selling counterfeits that is when we contacted ACA in Eldoret and asked them to inspect all the products,” said Ms Astrom told the press after the crackdown.
She singled out China and India as the main source of the counterfeit products.
“A bearing is a very sensitive product. It is mounted in power plants, factories, cars. Everything that is rotating should have bearing and if it fails it can have catastrophic consequences that it can lead to massive injuries,” she added.
ACA regional head Yusuf Osman said that they are also questioning the two suspects over the source of the fake SKF bearings that have infiltrated into the Kenyan largest automobile market.
