An ‘Action Alert’ sent out by leading community movement Power of Wind has called on the American people to tell the newly-elected US President Donald Trump of the importance of wind energy by sending a letter to his Transition Team. US wind industry Power of Wind labels itself “a leading community movement for the smarter, fairer energy policies we need to unleash the promise of wind energy.” The initiative is working from several angles to show the US Government just how popular wind energy is throughout the country, and help shed some light on the real facts behind wind energy. In an email sent out to supporters, Power of Wind has called on Americans “to help Mr. Trump and his appointees understand the latest progress and strengths of wind power.” By linking to Donald Trump’s own website asking Americans “How do you want to Make America Great?,” Power of Wind is urging its supporters to “Send a note to President-elect Trump and the 2017 Presidential Transition Team today encouraging them to support wind energy.” The group includes these important facts about wind power in America: Americans overwhelming favor expanding wind energy (by 83% in a recent Pew poll) Wind supports 88,000 well-paying jobs across all 50 states Many of these jobs are filled by our returning veterans Over 21,000 U.S. factory workers make a majority of American wind farm content here at home Wind has the lowest impacts on wildlife of any way to make large amounts of electricity All forms of energy have incentives Incentives for renewable energy are already being phased out starting Jan. 1, yet will continue for all non-renewable energy sources The group even provides a sample message, which I’ll paste below, in case you want to message Donald Trump’s Transition Team and explain the merits of and need for wind energy in the United States. I want to continue building clean, homegrown, low-cost wind energy that makes our country more energy independent. From farmers in Kansas to former auto workers in Michigan, Americans everywhere are benefiting from wind energy and I want to share the facts about wind power with President-elect Trump and his transition team. Over 21,000 U.S. factory workers make a majority of American wind farm content right here in the USA, and returning veterans fill many of the 88,000 overall U.S. wind jobs. Wind energy also helps keep the lights on for more homes and businesses across the U.S. The Department of Energy data show wind power is the fifth largest electricity source in the U.S., providing electricity to power the equivalent of 20 million average American homes. Iowa, for example, now generates over 35 percent of its electricity from wind, and has seen manufacturing jobs return to towns where plants were shuttered by offshoring to Mexico. Wind power has among the lowest impacts on wildlife of any way to make electricity. Leading wildlife groups like the Audubon Society, the National Wildlife Federation, and the World Wildlife Fund support responsibility sited wind turbines. Unlike all other human sources, the wind industry works to minimize and offset the limited impacts it has on individual birds (still less than .01% of those impacted by human activity), building on our legacy of care for birds and the environment. And while all forms of energy receive federal support, incentives for renewable energy are already being phased out starting Jan. 1, yet will continue for all non-renewable energy sources. I urge you to support wind energy; it means well-paying jobs for veterans and in rural and rust belt America, where people are hurting and need the economic development wind power brings.
